How do we multiply 2, 3 or 4-digit numbers by one number?
Now that you are getting more fluent with your multiplication facts, how can you use them to solve more complex multiplication problems? Take it one step at a time!
Step 1: Start in the ones place (multiply 7 x 6 in the example).
Step 2: Write the answer (42) but split the tens and ones. Carry the 4 (from the tens place) to the top of the middle column, and write the 2 in the ones place.
Step 3: Multiply 3 x 6 (=18) and add back the 4 that you carried over
from step 2. Write 22 and split the tens and ones again.
Step 4: Multiply 6 x 6 and add in the 2 you carried over. Write the answer (38) on the product line.
